random thoughts on a monday morning...
despite the fact that i have lived in the
southern hemisphere for nearly 15 years now,
the opposite seasons still confuses my brain...
possibly also because we don't have radical seasons changes
here on the Dolphin Coast but
i seem to constantly have to remind myself that, yes it is May
and no it is not spring, it is autumn.
to add to the confusion we can buy tulips here at the moment?
i'm not sure where they are from but when i saw these ones,
with the frayed edges...
i mean aren't they just too glorious? couldn't resist.
oh and because "winter" is coming this side of the planet,
i've started knitting a beanie ;)
i'm really good at starting knitting projects,
not sure if i ever finished one though.
let's this one be the one!
and i love the pink of the tulip and the pale green of the penny gum leaves together.
this beautiful world we live in...
i am in awe of this little flower finding her unique way
into this world...
just like all of us,
with bravery, courage and deep trust.
you can see the one flower above it,
slightly more advanced, about to open.
they are magical, like little parcels opening into stars,
i will show you once they do.
nature just does it best!
at home
last year our house became an ever
changing "art gallery".
with the exhibition coming i had paintings lying
everywhere, hanging here and there so i could
"live" with them and make the changes needed.
but now it's time to redecorate and settle things down.
i really wanted a reminder of my 365 faces challenge,
so M and i carefully chose through the ones
remaining and i had them mounted.
then last week we took on the labour of love
of hanging them.
(well i mostly watched and passed the tools :) )
they are between the entrance and the kitchen,
i pass them many, many times a day.
and that wall of little guys makes me ridiculously happy!
playing...
with the exhibition coming up
working in the studio has felt more serious lately
and i miss the playfulness of just exploring and experimenting.
so the other day i gave myself permission to do just that,
it was SO delicious!
and of course some great ideas came out of it...
permission to play = always very important!
learning
i spent the weekend at Roz's studio for a bookmaking workshop
taught by Sharon from the Printing Press Durban.
on the first day we did the book above,
unfortunately i can't remember the name...
it now has a cover as well but i still need to do some trimming
and adjusting.
below is the coptic book we made on the second day.
i used old painting as covers.
the idea with the coptic style is to leave the stitching on the spine
to show, they form a pretty pattern and make it look deliciously handmade.
i love the book feels and i can't wait to start sketching in it.
i loved making something 3 dimensional again,
i realized i am missing that since i have been to pottery this year.
what a treat to be making something out of bits and pieces...
it's in the simple things ;)
summer days
my parents are arriving from Switzerland this weekend.
it's time to head outside,
walk by the ocean,
soak up the sun,
connect and share.
